Detective Jean Applequist's life is in danger after she is asked to investigate the death of her friend's husband, a noted blackmailer and womanizer with many known enemies.
I loved the book. The sex was great, the writing terse, the wine selection impeccable, and the caste practically Tolstoyan. The author introduces characters that are as complex as life. The protagonist is well drawn, a woman of appetite, libido, and impulse. No great housekeeper or driver of cars, she's thirsty for gratification instead -- a particular kind of man, fast cars, idiosyncratic wines. The villains -- and they're more numerous than you might expect -- are devious and dangerous, certainly, but they're also conflicted, and trying in their own way to atone for what they know to be serious mistakes. Human beings. The author sets the scene in San Francisco masterfully. A tourist could do much worse than follow the characters around the City from in restaurant to neighborhood bar to world-class taqueria. And her comments on French and California wines are a reliable guide for any wine enthusiast. It was a great read and a real page-turner. Keep 'em coming, Ms. King!
